Music – During Mardi Gras 2006, Netscape had the chance to talk with Mardi Gras Indians Monk Boudreaux, Big Chief of the Golden Eagles, and David Montana, Second Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas, about their Mardi Gras Indians suits and what the traditions of Mardi Gras mean to them.
I guess you'd had to have grown-up in New Orleans to know this but Mardi Gras Indians are an integral part of New Orleans colorful history going back over a hundred years. There are almost 40 "tribes" around the city and their names, costumes and history are known by locals, true Mardi Gras scholars and enthusiasts.
Yes, it would help if you grew-up in the city, but really all it takes is a google search and a little respect for traditions and cultures you may not be aware of.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but the Mardi Gras Indians aren't actually.. Indians.. Right? How about having respect for traditions and cultures most people are aware of..
If you'd watched the video you would have heard that African slaves and Native Americans had very close bonds in the early years of this country. Many married and had children. As a result, there are Black Americans all over this country who have Native American Indian blood in their ancestry. Native Americans helped fleeing slaves, and the Mardi Gras Indians uphold the continued feeling of gratitude by honoring those actions in song, dance and dress on Mardi Gras Day. The Mardi Gras Indians have a DEEP respect for Native Americans.
I'm sure they say that while they dress up in bizzare mockery of traditional Native clothing, but it'd be interesting to say what the Native Americans who used to own New Orleans (not to mention the rest of the country)think.
Hey, Alexia. I totally got it. But I had to try several times before I could finally get a decent data stream. Definitely on the server side.
Anyway, nice work and it reminded me of the uniqueness of other semi-indigenous cultures like the Ga. Coastal Gullah. As they have basically been left to their own accord, they have developed a truly unique culture and it's interesting to see peak and valleys of the influences of Creole black and indian, along with, of course, Southern charm.
I am a descendant of a very blended family from Southern Louisiana - New Orleans. My paternal grandmother was born to African and Native American parents and her husband to an African mother by a German father. Many of the traditions, people, celebrations and food in New Orleans are living tribute to the blending and respect of those varied cultures.
You made a pretty good point, but believe me there was much respect given.
