Genesis Makes A Revelation in Philadelphia. Some thoughts and observations regarding The Genesis Turn It On Again Tour. In the beginning, music was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of Art-Rock moved upon the face of the waters. And it was good.

The Bottom line- It was a great show.

Yes we wish Peter and Steve would have joined in but it didn't happen that way. This show was great fun and they did justice to various eras of the band's history.

My best friend Dave R. just attended the Genesis concert in Detroit, and he described it as one of the finest musical adventures he ever enjoyed. I would agree, Genesis is one of the finest bands on the planet.

        What's not to like right?

Now it came to pass on the 23rd day of the ninth month in the year 2007 according to the Gregorian Calendar, the band brought its reunion tour to The Wachovia Center for a sold-out concert.

And lo, there was much rejoicing.

I've liked everything these guys have done whether together or solo---even into Mike& The Mechanics. Who's songs can you sing along with better than Phil Collins?

You know Radio , you really come up with some great stuff in your prose .That was really good reading . Ah , Genesis . Well I'm one of the hold-outs for the Old Genesis . I'm not taking anything away from The Trio as musicians , but I just like the older stuff . So how did Collins fit in Brand-X with all this stuff going on ?

On a different note [ pun intended ] , I got to see " The Music Box " last year , a cover band of old Genesis . They really were great . They did Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound . And did it very well I must say . Go see them if you like the old stuff .

Genesis ....the old Genisis was a great band. The solo careers of Gabriel and Colins were also excellent. Peter Gabriels SO was one of my favorites....great lyrics....great sound.

This is a great tune.....one that means a lot to a lot of people.

                Greenmac -

I can't believe you posted this; I was thinking of doing the same. I saw the SO tour twice in Washington D.C.; one of the best concerts I've ever seen. On the first night, we were treated to a surprise appearance by Kate Bush - I'll never forget that...

One of my college professors was in the running to take Peter Gabriel's place. He'd auditioned, but lost out to Collins. My professor was an extremely talented guy. He could just sit down at the piano and write a song in front of our eyes. He told us the story and you could tell he was very bitter about it.

But, in all honesty, I think Phil Collins was the best choice.

I'd love to see them in Concert! I'm also glad to see them back touring again after all these years.......

                  Great article!

I was turned onto Genesis back in 1976-1977. My friend was so excited; he had just purchased "Trick of the Tail." We listened to the whole album. I was hooked after that and have all the group stuff and individual efforts. I love Peter Gabriel's' music and think he is a musical genius! Rock on!

I am a big fan of their song that recounts the true story of the danger of transplanted exotic species, "Return of the Giant Hogweed." Funny, too.

Gabriel's post-Genesis contributions also helped change the face of pop music.

Gabriel's first solo album was amazing. I'm still amazed at the staying power of the song "Solsbury Hill", though that was my least favorite on the album.

I mourn for those days when you could get excited in anticipation for an album like that coming out.

Ah, Music of a marvelously misspent youth.

And to think they call some of the crap out there these days "alternative".

Last I saw Genesis was, oddly enough, at the Spectrum (now the Wachovia?????) in '79 or '80.

                        Yep, mighty fine.

And those other ones, inclusive of that man of the crux of the biscuit....right down to the Dixie Dreggs....

Philadelphia has traditionally supported "art" rock bands in a big way. Yes, Genesis, Zappa, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, etc. were always treated to the most welcome of heroic responses when playing there. Peter Gabriel sold out the old "Spectrum" for 5 nights. I Always noticed these same bands often were playing smaller venues for fewer dates in many other cities. My guess is WMMR's independent DJ's of the time often played and promoted this type music along with many others. This proves once again that the people CAN appreciate music that requires more attention to appreciate than a potato chip (if given decent exposure). Either that or Phila. had better drugs. :Q

                          LOL

I stepped into the Genesis phenomenon with Then There Were THree and Second Out. Pure bliss, espscially for an up and coming drummer like myself at the time. Phils was a huge influence on me for his drumming, no doubt.

I have soem friends who thought Phil was a sellout, and actually toyed with assassinating him for doing the Disney soundtracks. That's a sad statement, that fans cannot appreciate one's need to grow and cahse bigger dreams.

Anyway, if you would like to hear what Genesis may have sounded like if they kept Gabriel, yet updated their sound for today's market, check out the band "The Watch" from Italy. I couldn't stop listening to them for a solid year!

Listen to the song "Deeper Still" on their MySpace site. Amazing!

I know what you mean, so many folks hated the change of direction yet to understand it their 1st commercial hit ( Then there were 3) brought more profit than all the albums before that combined. Who doesn't want to be successful?

Saw the Buffalo show and thought it was great. More of a Phil fan myself, but they put on a great show with great background effects. Can't get into this story though...

Though the current show is ok, you haven't seen Genesis unless you were there in the spring of '73.

Many (myself included) feel this is so. And as mentioned in the article there has been a duality evident in the audience.

At the show I attended it was obvious who had been fans back in the early days by the rejoicing of the playing of the older music vs. those who showed equal delight at the hits. They were not the same audience members. As for me seeing Peter Gabriel sing "Suppers Ready" was a life altering experience. Seeing the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway the following tour blew out most of my remaining mental circuitry. Truly had to rewire myself after that. I long for similar musical and intellectual experience in our current times and find the occasional tidbit but no "Supper".

I have come to the conclusion that these windows of high art don't happen all that often and we who were enlightened by these experiences should be thankful that the dice rolled in such a way that we were alive during that time.

I like their older stuff too. I saw them in concert about 15 years ago and they were lousy. They acted like they hated being there.

Are you sure they played in Philly? I thought Van Halen was in town. Went to see that on Monday night.
