One of the great losses to music fans as we go to smaller and more compact mediums is the album art which developed to such a high degree with LP releases. Today I'd like to spotlight one of the best design teams in this field. Hipgnosis. All the art on display here was created by this design team.

    These are just some of the masterpieces designed by Hipgnosis.

    A sample of their visual genius. They always listened thoughtfully to the music and let the music inspire the visual. Just great stuff.

      I remember becoming aware of Hipgnosis while idly reading the liner notes to Pink Floyd albums when I was a teenager.

      And I agree...the 5"x5" CD art isn't nearly as much fun as the 12"x12" record album covers. Pretty soon, we won't even have that.

    Thanks Radio......I have a collection of LP's that I will never get rid of mainly because of the art work. The work that was in this story shows some of the best.

    This is one of my favorites

        Sadly, my huge collection was spread among a number of friends and family members in 1974 (for "safe keeping" while I travelled overseas), and much of it is now lost.

        Some of the 1960s West coast bands had superb album art which complemented the posters advertising their shows, mostly in and around San Francisco. The Grateful Dead, in particular, had beautifully designed covers on their early LPs.

        Among the amazing covers shown is one for a band I'd forgotten, "Caravan" -- great cover. I guess the Hipgnosis team didn't do the cover for their "In the Land of Grey and Pink", Caravan's magnum opus.

        Another welcome & diverting thread, Radio. Keep 'em copming. Things can get a little hectic in some of the more, er, political(?) discussions.

          My first experience with their art was Houses of the Holy. Presence was intriguing as well. Made you think. I stared the most at Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The graphic icons on the sleeves were clever and added to the story. I loved Time Passages and Year of the Cat as well.

          Please cover 23Envelope's work sometime.

              "And indeed there will be time

              For the yellow smoke that slides along the street,

              Rubbing its back upon the window-panes;

              There will be time, there will be time

              To prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet;

              There will be time to murder and create,

              And time for all the works and days of hands

              That lift and drop a question on your plate;

              Time for you and time for me,

              And time yet for a hundred indecisions

              And for a hundred visions and revisions

              Before the taking of a toast and tea.

              In the room the women come and go

              Talking of Michelangelo."

              (A few lines from "The Love-Song of J. Alfred Prufrock")

              By T.S. Eliot

              The art hasn't stopped, just the talk of it.

                The sound doesn't seem the same on the little disks they use today. Seems that the old record style gave out more vibrations. Guess I'm a bit of an old foegie. Makes me think of where all my old albums are at. Thanks Radio

                  That London Calling cover was influential and often imitated, to good effect. Can you name them?

                      When I was little I was totally fascinated with my moms' Rolling Stones' "Some Girls" album. So fascinated, in fact, that I went & got a pair of scissors and cut up the sleeve so I could switch all the faces around. :-O

                      Mom was "Shattered".
